Chelsea High’s boys cross country team has made an impressive start to the season, remaining undefeated and positioning themselves among the top contenders for the CAC championship. Coach Don Fay’s Red Devils achieved their most notable result when they edged previously undefeated Greater Lowell in a thrilling contest decided by a single point, 27-28. Leading the charge was Chelsea’s standout runner Ugo Cvjetan, who crossed the finish line first with a time of 18:35 on the 3.1 mile course, extending his personal undefeated streak. Sophomore Joseph Arroyo placed third with a 19:32 performance. Senior Captain Santos Hernandez secured sixth place, with teammate Francisco Colindres close behind at 20:17. The meet’s outcome ultimately depended on fifth runner senior Hector Mendoza, who needed to finish in 10th place. Mendoza delivered, narrowly edging a Greater Lowell competitor to secure victory for Chelsea. Had Mendoza placed 11th instead, the teams would have tied at 28-28 points. This victory marked the second consecutive year Chelsea has defeated Greater Lowell by the identical 27-28 margin. On Thursday, the Red Devils faced Essex Agricultural and dominated with a 15-50 shutout win. Chelsea’s runners claimed the top nine finishes, with sophomore Joseph Arroyo earning his first cross country meet victory in 20:02. Junior Francisco Colindres took second place overall in 20:03. Junior Edgar Ocana finished third at 20:21, followed by Norbert Simon and Hector Mendoza, who rounded out Chelsea’s scoring with times of 20:46 and 20:48 respectively.
