Suffolk County’s decision to eliminate the Bunker Hill Holiday represents a profound disrespect to those who fell or suffered injuries during the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought against the British in service of the Revolution. According to the Legislature, maintaining this holiday was deemed both fiscally wasteful and lacking in significance. This assessment is fundamentally misguided. The irony deepens when examining the actual financial consequence: honoring an existing union contract means that abandoning the Bunker Hill Holiday will ultimately cost taxpayers an additional $1 million. The holiday will not be celebrated, yet no money will be saved. This stands as yet another egregious failure of judgment by the state Legislature.
