During a busy week of Commonwealth Athletic Conference play, the Chelsea High baseball team captured two victories in three outings. Last Friday, the Red Devils topped Lynn Tech by a score of 10-4, with the Urbaez Bros. playing pivotal roles in the triumph. Odanys Urbaez took the mound and pitched six innings, surrendering five hits and striking out nine batters. Though he gave up two runs in the first inning, Odanys pitched effectively thereafter. His twin brother Adonys made an impact at the plate, driving in five runs. His three-run, inside-the-park homer in the fourth inning transformed a close 6-3 game into a commanding 9-3 Chelsea lead. In the bottom of the first, Adonys singled home two runs to erase Tech’s initial 2-0 advantage, and he added a triple in the second inning that scored another Red Devil. Eli Ortiz proved troublesome for Lynn Tech all evening, collecting a hit, drawing two walks, stealing two bases, and scoring three runs. Manny Ferrer contributed a double and an RBI. Jose Pineda closed out the game with a 1-2-3 final inning.
On Monday, Chelsea posted a well-executed 4-2 win over archival Northeast Regional Vocational. Ortiz delivered a complete game performance, allowing four hits and striking out nine N.E. Voke batters. He maintained a shutout through five innings before N.E. Voke scored twice in the sixth, then sealed the victory with a strikeout in the seventh. Ortiz also hit a triple in the opening inning and scored on a ground out. Chelsea’s offense added three runs in the fourth inning, aided by a hit batsman and two N.E. errors. A single by Pineda that scored two runners proved to be the only Chelsea hit during that rally.
Tuesday brought disappointment, however. As the saying goes, “You can’t win ’em all,” and the Red Devils fell victim to a no-hitter, losing 4-0 to Greater Lowell, the top team in the Large School Division of the CAC. Head coach Alan Beausoleil’s squad, which holds an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 CAC mark (6-0 against Small Division opponents), were scheduled to face Mystic Valley on Wednesday, host Minuteman on Monday, and travel to Shawsheen the following Wednesday.
