Chelsea High’s boys track team continued their dominance this past week, securing victories over Whittier Tech and Mystic Valley with scores of 95-40 and 90-46, respectively. These twin wins have kept Coach Don Fay’s Red Devils undefeated on the season at 5-0 and extended their streak of consecutive dual meet wins to 30, dating back to April 2007. Senior captain Santos Hernandez claimed victory in both 400 meter hurdle events last week and set a personal record (PR) of 17.7 in the 110 meter high hurdles against Mystic Valley, finishing second to Whittier in that same event. Senior captain Norbert Simon excelled against both Whittier Tech and Mystic Valley, winning three events in each meet. In the Whittier meet, he triumphed in the 100 meters with a PR of 11.3, the 200 meters with a time of 23.9, and the high jump with a leap of 5-4. He also took second in the long jump with a PR of 19-11.5. In the Mystic Valley meet, Norbert claimed victories in the 100, 200, and long jump events and finished third in the triple jump. Walter Cortez took the javelin in both meets, throwing a PR of 135-2 inches against Whittier. Christian Ortega won the shot put in both meets with throws of 38-1 and 37-11. Francisco Colindres secured victories in the 800 meters in both contests, setting a PR of 2:15 against Mystic Valley. Edgar Ocana led a sweep in the two mile event against Whittier, with Hector Mendoza and Tyler Potter following closely behind. Joseph Arroyo won the mile against Whittier and set a PR of 11:19 in the two mile against Mystic Valley, though he was disqualified for a lane violation. Juan Achar won the discus against Whittier with a PR of 96-10, while Rony Gomez claimed the discus title against Mystic Valley with a throw of 100-7. Brandon Rath won the 400 meters against Whittier and placed second against Mystic Valley in the same event. Luis Hernandez earned four second-place finishes against Mystic Valley in the 400 hurdles, 110 meter hurdles, high jump, and triple jump. Troy Crossley claimed the triple jump title against Mystic Valley and placed second in the long jump. He also earned third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Other second-place finishes for the Red Devils against Whittier came from Yehya Nur in the mile, Brian Pliego in the 800, Crossley in the 200 dash, and Rony Gomez in the discus. Third-place finishes against Whittier were recorded by Crossley in the 100, John Rodriguez in the mile, Chester Rath in the 400 meters, Mendoza in the 800, and Andy Rath in the shot put. In the meet against Mystic Valley, second-place finishes were earned by Joseph Arroyo in the mile, Chester Rath in the 800, Achar in the shot put, and Cortez in the discus. Third-place performances against Mystic Valley were achieved by Ocana in the mile, Pliego in the 400 and javelin, Richard Andino in the discus, and Brian Sosa in the long jump. “We have two tough meets this week against Shawsheen Tech (4-1) and Greater Lowell (5-0) which will decide the regular season dual meet title,” said Fay. “The boys have worked hard this year and hopefully with some strong performances we can come out on top in what should be very close meets.”
