Coach Don Fay’s freshmen and sophomores dominated the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Freshman and Sophomore Meet on Tuesday, capturing the league championship with an impressive 166-point total that left all competitors in their wake.
Jeffrey Estrada emerged as the standout performer for the Chelsea High boys outdoor track team. The young Red Devil claimed victory in the 400 hurdles with a time of 67.4, won the triple jump, and anchored the winning 4 x 400 relay squad.
The CHS victory also hinged on strong contributions from Adriel Rodriguez, who took first in the shotput at 36-4, placed second in the javelin, and finished third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.03.
Jefferson Elian added significantly to Chelsea’s point total by winning the discus with a personal best throw of 88-5 and placing fifth in the 100 meter dash. Meanwhile, David Skolodoski secured a CAC Fr.-So. title by capturing the 400 meter dash in 58.7.
Additional point-scorers for the Red Devils included: Kevin Mendez with a second-place finish in the 400 hurdles and third in the triple jump; Faisal Nasimi, who ran a personal best 5:23 in the mile for second place, took third in the high jump, and anchored the winning 4 x 400 team; Sam Hernandez, second in the 400 meter dash and a 4 x 400 member; Jay Pedrero, who finished second in the 800 at 2:26 and competed on the 4 x 400 quartet; Brendan Lara with a third-place finish in the 110 meter high hurdles; Eric Flores, fourth in the 110 hurdles and second in the high jump with a 5-2 leap; Brian Horn, third in the mile at 5:43; and Josue Theosmy, who placed fourth in the discus and sixth in the 200 meter dash.
The 4 x 100 relay team of Marconi Correra, Theosmy, Elian, and Rodriguez also claimed a CAC crown, winning with a time of 48.7.
This Saturday morning at Greater Lowell, the complete CHS squad will compete in the CAC League Meet.
CHS girls win Frosh-Soph Meet
At Chelsea Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, the freshmen and sophomore girls of Chelsea High claimed the Commonwealth Athletic Conference title in a thrilling one-point victory over Notre Dame of Tyngsboro, 120-119. Mystic Valley rounded out the top three with 70 points.
Inclement weather had forced the postponement of the meet from the previous Saturday.
This championship marked the fourth consecutive CAC Freshmen-Sophomore Meet Championship for the CHS girls’ team under Coach Kim Huffer.
Key performers for the Lady Red Devils were:
Sophomore Gabriela Ramirez: Won both hurdle events with a 1st place finish in the 400 low hurdles (80.9) and 1st in the 100 high hurdles (20.54);
Freshman Katherine Cabral: 1st in the long jump (14’5), 2nd in the 400 meter dash, and 4th in the 200 meter dash;
Sophomore Dzenana Karajic: 3rd in the 400 hurdles;
Sophomore Sara Beqo: 3rd in the two mile and 4th in the 800;
Sophomore Sofia Falcon: 3rd in the mile;
Sophomore Chimene Agogo: 3rd in the 400 dash and 4th in the long jump;
Sophomore Joy Mejia: 3rd in the 800;
Freshman Mariama Kamara: 3rd in the 200 and 4th in the 100;
Freshman Jazmin Castellon: 3rd in the shot put and 4th in the discus;
Sophomore Meghan Nguyen: 3rd in the long jump;
Freshman Wendy Becerra: 5th in the mile and 6th in the 800;
Freshman Emely Burgos: 5th in the 400; and
Sophomore Steicy Martins: 6th in the long jump, earning the crucial single point that provided her team with the winning margin.
The 4 x 400 relay team of Chimene Agogo, Dzenana Karajic, Joy Mejia, and Sofia Falco finished in second place.
The full CHS girls squad will participate in the CAC League Meet Saturday morning at Greater Lowell.
Red Devils edge Lynn Tech, 11-10
A spectacular throw-out at home plate in the final inning allowed the Chelsea High baseball team to secure an 11-10 victory over Lynn Tech last week in dramatic fashion.
On a textbook relay play, outfielder Nelson Vega threw to cutoff man Carlos Vega, who relayed to catcher Luis Rodriguez, gunning down the potential tying run before the Tech runner could reach home.
For the hard-luck Red Devils, who have suffered through numerous close contests decided in late and extra innings this season, this win represented a measure of redemption. After Lynn Tech jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, Chelsea responded with five runs in the bottom of the first and added two more in each of the second and third innings to establish a 9-3 advantage that appeared commanding.
Tech mounted a comeback with six runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 9-9, aided by some Chelsea fielding mistakes. The Red Devils retook the lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Tech rallied in the seventh to score one run and narrow the deficit to 11-10 before the dramatic final out ended their threat.
Frankie Rodriguez starred offensively for Chelsea, going 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Carlos Vega, who pitched all seven innings for the victory, contributed to his own cause with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a triple, three ribbies, a run, and a stolen base.
“Carlos pitched well for us, but we made some errors in their fifth that allowed them to get back in the game,” said CHS head coach Alan Beausoleil.
The Red Devils struggled in their other contests last week, losing to Whittier, Maimonides, and Greater Lowell.
In a 5-3 defeat to Whittier, Nelson Pineda delivered a complete game on the mound, surrendering just six hits. Carlos Ramos contributed two hits including a triple, scoring a run with an RBI. Dan Velastegui recorded a hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
Velastegui went 3-for-3 in Tuesday’s loss to Greater Lowell, while Pineda hit a home run.
Standing at 5-12 on the season, the Red Devils will complete their 2013 campaign with three road contests, beginning today (Thursday) at Greater Lowell. The team travels to Northeast Regional on Tuesday and to Lynn Tech on Wednesday.
