This week brought the opening of Chelsea High’s boys track season, with the Red Devils scheduled to compete against Mystic Valley on Tuesday and Greater Lowell on Thursday.
In a scrimmage meet last Friday against Everett, Coach Don Fay’s squad demonstrated considerable talent. Several Chelsea tracksters turned in noteworthy performances under the coach’s direction.
Posting 13 points each were CHS captain Jeffrey Estrada and Ricky Maldonado, who each won two events and placed second in a third. The 400 hurdles fell to Estrada with a time of 65.5 seconds, while he also captured the mile at 5:22. His third-place finish came in the triple jump at 34′-4″. Maldonado won the javelin with a throw of 131′-2″ and the high jump with a leap of 5′-9″, though he finished second in the 400 meters in 56.8.
Haidar Kareem claimed victory in the 110 high hurdles at 21.1, and Mohamed Qasim won the triple jump with a distance of 34’11”. Qasim also earned third place in the 200 meter dash at 26.2.
Contributing nine points through second-place finishes was Eric Flores, who competed in the 400 hurdles in 72.9, the 110 high hurdles in 21.3, and the high jump at 5′-2″. Christian Calix earned second in the javelin with a toss of 108′-2″, while Chris Sanyet took second in the 100 dash in 12.3. Marcone Corrone, a captain, placed third in the 400 meter dash in 58.7. Dominick Vega rounded out the scoring with third place in the javelin at 102′.
CHS baseball team drops opening contests
Last week’s season debut was disappointing for the Chelsea High baseball team, which suffered defeats to both Greater Lawrence on Thursday and Northeast Regional on Friday.
Against Greater Lawrence in the opening game, Chelsea led 2-1 through four innings. The Red Devils’ first run came when Carlos Ramos walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Orlando Rodriguez. Greater Lawrence evened the score in the third, but Chelsea answered with a run of its own when Yvad Rosado singled, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on an error by the Greater Lawrence third baseman on a ball hit by Carlos Vega.
The visitors broke open the contest by scoring seven runs in the fifth inning, built on four hits, three walks, and a hit batter, extending their lead to 8-2. Chelsea mounted a comeback attempt with two sixth-inning runs courtesy of a Luis Rodriguez double that scored both Armando Montes, who had singled, and Carlos Vega, who had walked. The Red Devils added two more runs in the seventh with George Hernandez and Yvad Rosado scoring, and Montes delivering an RBI hit. Greater Lawrence countered with a run in the top of the seventh, but Chelsea could not overcome the deficit, losing 9-6. “fblikebutton_button” That one bad inning really did us in, observed CHS head coach Alan Beausoleil. But to our credit, we continued to play hard and put some runs up on the board to make it close. We had two runners on and the tying run at the plate before the game ended.
A shutout followed on Friday when Northeast Regional blanked the Red Devils 11-0, holding Chelsea to just one hit—a single by Carlos Vega.
Looking ahead, Beausoleil’s team will face Mystic Valley tonight (Thursday) under the lights at Malden Catholic’s field, then host North Shore Tech tomorrow. East Boston visits Tuesday, and Lynn Tech awaits next Thursday.
