Last week, the Chelsea High baseball team secured a 5-4 win against Minuteman Regional, powered by pitcher Carlos Vega’s complete-game performance and consistent offensive production across the lineup.
The mound work by Vega proved decisive. Over seven innings, Carlos surrendered just two earned runs while recording 13 strikeouts.
In the opening inning, Chelsea established a 1-0 advantage when Ramos tripled and scored on a Yvad Rosado sacrifice fly. Minuteman answered with a run in the second, but the Red Devils responded by plating two runs of their own in that same frame. A pair of base hits from Orlando Rodriguez and Luis Rodriguez, combined with one from Manny Ortiz, loaded the bases for Abel Araujo, whose two-RBI single extended Chelsea’s lead to 3-1.
Two more Chelsea runs came in the third on a two-out rally. Thomas Melanson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second following an error, then Armando Montes singled him home. Orlando Rodriguez followed with another base hit to score Montes, pushing the Red Devil advantage to 5-1.
A three-run outburst by Minuteman in the fifth narrowed the margin to 5-4, but Vega dominated the final two innings with back-to-back 1-2-3 frames and three strikeouts, securing the victory.
Coach Alan Beausoleil’s squad faces a demanding schedule. Tomorrow’s home contest features Mystic Valley, while Shawsheen visits Monday (rescheduled from today due to weather concerns). The team will travel to North Shore on Tuesday and Whittier next Thursday before hosting Lynn Tech the following Friday.
Lady Red Devil tracksters defeat Lynn Tech, 100-34
Chelsea High’s girls track team notched its third win of the season by defeating Lynn Tech 100-34 in a meet held before the vacation break.
Double-winners for Coach Kim Huffer’s team included Jazmin Castellon and Sarah Bourouis.
Castellon claimed victories in shotput and discus, while Bourouis won the high jump and 200 meter dash.
Additional first-place performances came from Wendy Becerra in the two-mile run, Norell Campos in the 100 high hurdles, Mariama Kamara in the 100 dash, Katherine Villagran in the mile, and Gabriela Ramirez in the triple jump.
Chelsea dominated four events through sweeps: the 200 dash, 400 dash, 800 run, and long jump. Bourouis led the 200 dash ahead of Joana Arevalo and Steicy Martins. The 400 dash sweep included Owliyo Mohamud, Yessenia Motta, and Abril Bocanegrail. In the 800, Emely Burgos, Melanie Nguyen, and Joy Mejia finished 1-2-3. The long jump was won by Moni, Melanie Nguyen, and Chimene Agogo.
The 4 x 100 relay team also prevailed, posting a time of 54.7 seconds.
Huffer’s squad returns to competition today (Thursday) against Presentation of Mary and again next Wednesday for a tri-meet involving Shawsheen and Notre Dame.
