Chelsea has become a filming location once more as production crews have arrived to shoot scenes for “Black Mass,” an upcoming film depicting the early criminal activities of “Whitey” Bulger in Boston and the surrounding region.

This week, equipment trucks and production signs appeared on Chestnut and Williams Streets in the vicinity of Fernandez Liquors. The crews are expected to film near the Mystic/Tobin Bridge, a frequently used location by filmmakers. During the previous summer, production teams spent several weeks shooting fight scenes beneath the Tobin and converted Chelsea Floor Covering store into a temporary coffee shop for another film based on the 1980s television series “The Equalizer,” which starred Denzel Washington in the lead role and brought the actor to Chelsea multiple times during production.

Specifics about the duration and exact locations for “Black Mass” filming have not been announced.

According to reports, production activities are scheduled for both Revere Beach and Chelsea.

The film casts Johnny Depp as Whitey and Guy Pearce as former Sen. President Billy Bulger.

Should the production proceed as successfully as last year’s filming, Chelsea may see additional major Hollywood talent in the area this summer.
