At Greater Lowell on Saturday, the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Meet drew nine teams, with Chelsea High’s boys track and field squad placing fourth overall. Greater Lowell, Whittier, and Gr. Lawrence all finished ahead of the Red Devils.
According to CHS head coach Don Fay, “fblikebutton_button” The coach added that the team had competed closely against Whittier and Gr. Lawrence but ultimately fell short, along with Greater Lowell. Despite the third-year drought since the league title, Fay believes meaningful progress has been made toward reclaiming that goal.
The standout performer for Chelsea was Ricky Maldonado, who took first in the javelin championship with a throw of 145′-7″. In three additional events, Maldonado collected medals: a second-place high jump at 6′-0″ (matching a Lynn Tech athlete but with an additional miss), a third-place 400 dash clocking of 54.1, and an anchor leg on the 4 x 400 relay team (running with Mohamed Qasim, Marcone Correra, and Alecio Dasilva) that posted 3:46 for third place.
Accumulating 25.5 points across his performances, Maldonado earned CAC league MVP honors. Fay observed that “fblikebutton_button” The coach noted the decisive javelin throw and two narrow near-misses in the high jump and 400 meters. At next Sunday’s State Divisional Meet in Braintree, Maldonado will compete in the high jump.
Mohamed Qasim earned a second-place triple jump medal with a distance of 37′-9″ and finished fifth in the 400 meters with a personal best of 55.8.
Jeffrey Estrada, a junior, claimed third place in both the 400 intermediate hurdles (63.1) and the 800 meters (2:11 personal best).
The boys 4×100 relay squad of Mohamed Mohamed, Cris Sanyet, Josue Theosmy and Jose Aguilar executed smooth handoffs and earned third place with 48.4.
Fay remarked on the small roster of 28 athletes and their collective contributions throughout the season. He emphasized that “fblikebutton_button” The coach stressed both the team’s respectful demeanor and the daily commitment to improvement shown by most competitors.
Cabral sets CHS mark in 400 and is named CAC MVP
Chelsea High’s girls track and field team delivered an outstanding performance at Saturday’s Commonwealth Athletic Conference Meet at Greater Lowell.
Placing third among the competing teams, the Lady Red Devils finished behind Whittier and Notre Dame. CHS head coach Kim Huffer noted that despite bringing the smallest group of competitors to the CAC Meet in recent memory, the squad achieved 17 personal records on the day.
Sophomore Katherine Cabral provided the meet’s centerpiece, setting a new Chelsea High school record in the 400 dash at 63.8 seconds and capturing first place. She added second place in the 200 dash, third in the long jump, and third in the triple jump, accumulating 30 total points. Cabral’s exceptional performance throughout the season and at this meet resulted in her selection as the league MVP Award recipient.
Sarah Bourouis also earned a CAC championship, winning the 200 meter dash.

Competing at the Division 2 State Meet in New Bedford on Sunday will be Sarah Bourouis in the 200M, Mariama Kamara in the 100M, and the 4 x 100 relay of Sarah Bourouis, Mariama Kamara, Joana Arevalo, and Katherine Cabral.
Huffer reflected on the season’s hard work and acknowledged the six graduating seniors who provided key contributions. She expressed enthusiasm about the potential of younger athletes as they continue developing in seasons ahead.

Peers in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference voted CHS girls head track coach Kim Huffer as Coach of the Year. The Lady Red Devils also earned the MVP Award, which was voted to be given to sophomore Katherine Cabral. “fblikebutton_button”
CHS baseball team concludes season
The Chelsea High baseball team finished its 2014 season with a 7-4 defeat to Maimonides School last Wednesday evening at the CHS ballfield under the lights.
Through the first three innings, neither team scored. Maimonides then scored in consecutive fourth and fifth innings before adding three runs in the sixth to establish a 7-0 advantage.
The Red Devils mounted a determined comeback in the final inning, scoring four runs and bringing the tying run to the plate. Armando Montes opened with a double and scored on a base hit by Carlos Vega. Walks to Carlos Ramos and Orlando Rodriguez loaded the bases, with a Luis Martinez ground out advancing Vega. Subsequent hits by Luis Rodriguez and Luis Jiminez produced two additional runs, though the Red Devils could not close the gap.

Seniors Carlos Vega and Armando Montes earned selection to the CAC all-star team. At Monday’s all-star game, Vega pitched a 1-2-3 inning in support of a 5-4 victory.
