N.E. Tel & Tel Retiree and Whidden Hospital volunteer
On Friday morning, May 23, Helen Rose Mulkern died at the Leonard Florence Center for Living in Chelsea at age 97.
A Chelsea native and daughter of the late John and Mary (White) Mulkern, she completed her education at St. Rose High School, graduating in 1934. Following her high school years, Helen took a position with the original New England Tel & Tel, where she remained for 43 years before retiring. She held membership in the New England Telephone Pioneers of America. During her later years, volunteering at Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett became an important part of her life. Her passion for travel took her to destinations including New York City, Hawaii, Italy, Ireland, Monaco, Bermuda, Florida and Lake Winnipesaukee. Her family and friends will cherish her memory.
Preceding her in death were seven siblings: Mary McCarthy, Rev. John F. Mulkern, Edward Mulkern, Margaret Dixon, Gertrude Ireland, William Mulkern and Arthur Mulkern. She leaves behind 16 nieces and nephews, 21 great nieces and nephews and three great-grand nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place at Our Lady of Grace Church in Chelsea on Wednesday, followed by interment at the family plot in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.

Retired assistant bank treasurer
Early Monday morning, May 26, Geraldine T. (Hederson) Morneau succumbed at Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett following a medical emergency at her Chelsea residence. The retired assistant bank treasurer was 88.
Raised in Chelsea as the daughter of the late Chelsea Fire Dept. Capt. Thomas L. and Gertrude (McAdams) Hederson, “Geri” spent her entire life in the community. She attended local schools and raised four daughters and one son while working as a legal secretary at her brother’s law firm. Her banking career began with the former Atlantic Savings Bank in Chelsea and Revere, where she progressed from Mortgage Loan Officer and Administrative Assistant to Assistant Treasurer before retiring.
Her Catholic faith remained central throughout her life, and she served St. Rose Church in Chelsea as a lifelong parishioner and communicant, contributing years of service as a Parish Office Aide and volunteer Bingo Worker.
She was preceded by her parents, her only son John V. Morneau, siblings Thomas L. Hederson Jr. Esq. and Helen Hayes, and one grandson. Surviving her are daughters Patricia Renz of New Hampshire, Jeanne Casey and her husband John of Lynn, Claire Kowalski and her companion Ken of Malden, Nancy Herbert of Chelsea and the late John V. Morneau. She was also the dear cousin of Peggy Smith of Billerica and leaves nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 30, beginning at the Frank A. Welsh & Sons Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea at 9 a.m., with a Funeral Mass following at St. Rose Church, 600 Broadway, Chelsea at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours are scheduled for today, Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Welsh Funeral Home. All relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
