John “Doc” Mahoney, the former Parks director of Chelsea, is fondly remembered for the countless summer days when young residents flocked to the city’s playgrounds to take part in a wide range of recreational and sports activities.
Mr. Mahoney’s nephew, Tom Mahoney, also played an important role in the parks system, most notably through his efforts in founding the Chelsea High School soccer program and leading it to become a dominant force in the Greater Boston League as its coach.
In the past, parks like Voke, Quigley, Highland, Bosson, Merritt, and Polonia were hubs of activity, with basketball and baseball teams competing in a citywide league.
During the 1980s, the Summer Parks Feeding Program was led by Arnold Goodman, whose leadership was highly regarded, and Frank DePatto, who later became the director of athletics at Chelsea High School and continues to hold that position today, where he continues to perform exceptionally well.
Thanks to the efforts of City Manager Jay Ash, the city’s parks are in excellent condition, and ongoing improvements are being made to these facilities.
The summer parks feeding program is currently operating effectively, with breakfast and lunch options available at designated locations across the city.
We encourage young residents to make the most of the opportunities available at Chelsea’s parks and to regularly engage in sports and physical fitness activities.
There is great pleasure in playing outdoors in the fresh air during the summer months, and the city’s parks offer spacious and welcoming environments for recreation and fun.
Let’s make the most of the pleasant summer weather that is typical of New England during this time of year.
