Berkowitz School has been making impressive strides with the Boston Celtics’ Recycling Education Initiative, which is sponsored by Chelsea’s JN Phillips Auto Glass. Following a tip-off assembly held on Jan 11, the school launched its recycling contest, which runs through Jan. 25. The response from students and families has been extraordinary. According to school officials, by Tuesday more than 18,000 recyclable bottles had already been collected. The winning school will earn tickets to a game, a visit from a Celtics player and Lucky the Leprechaun, and a pep rally hosted by the Celtics. February and March will feature the remaining two components of the competition: reducing and reusing. In this photo, Berkowitz third graders Christopher Fuentes and Basma Yassine add two more bags to the ever-growing pile, contributing to what has become a record-breaking recycling drive.
