Red Devil boys hoop cruises to 58-44 win
Tuesday evening at the CHS gym, the Chelsea High boys basketball team returned to the .500 mark by defeating North Shore Tech, 58-44.
From the opening moments, the Red Devils dominated play, establishing a 13-6 advantage after the first quarter before extending their lead to 30-9 by halftime.
The Red Devils continued their strong performance in the second half, prompting CHS head coach Jay Seigal to rotate his full roster through the final two quarters.
Leading the Chelsea scoring effort was Angel Alvarez with 15 points. Steve Lacey contributed 13 points and Jahro Marshall added 10 points to reach double figures alongside Alvarez.
The remaining scoring came from Chris Torrez with six points, Guillermo Zelata with five, Werner Mazariegos with three, and Balmeiro Daveiga, Jaime Celorio, and Cobi Molina each with two points.
In a non-league matchup last Thursday, the Red Devils hosted Revere in what has become a rivalry contest between the two schools, echoing the historic Battles of Broadway that took place decades ago. The CHS gym was well-attended for a competitive game that remained close throughout, from the opening tip through the final buzzer.
The opening period saw Chelsea take a narrow 18-16 lead. At the half, Revere held a 30-29 advantage, and after three quarters the Patriots led 50-46. Throughout the fourth quarter, the Red Devils mounted several comeback attempts, but Revere’s strong free throw performance—15-of-16 from the line for the night—proved decisive in holding off Chelsea’s challenge.
Chelsea’s scoring was led by Torrez with 16 points, followed by Marshall with 15, Lacey with 12, Alvarez with seven, Zelata with five, and Mazariegos with three.
According to Seigal, whose team now has a 6-6 record, “fblikebutton_button” “We played well in both games. Hopefully we can put together a bit of a winning streak to get into the state tournament.”
Upcoming contests include a home game against Lynn Tech on Friday at 5:30 and a road trip to Whittier on Monday. Chelsea defeated both opponents in their earlier meetings this season.
