Enjoy the Long Weekend — And Thank Washington And Lincoln

Chelsea, Massachusetts

We now enter the President’s Day long weekend, offering an opportunity to escape the relentless winter weather (which intensified this week) and spend quality time with loved ones during the public school vacation period.

For many, this break means hitting the slopes with family, while others might head to sunnier destinations. Some may simply choose to unwind and anticipate warmer months ahead, knowing that April 1 lies just six weeks away.

Before becoming President’s Day and expanding into a long weekend, the Washington’s Birthday holiday was traditionally marked by Open House sales promotions from automobile dealers. Many residents will likely visit local car showrooms to find attractive deals during this promotional period.

The annual New England Boat Show, opening this weekend at the Convention Center, also coincides with the holiday weekend. For many, touring the boat displays offers a chance to daydream about leisurely summer days on the water and feel a sense of calm anticipation.

Adding another dimension this year, the long weekend overlaps with Valentine’s Day, prompting many to plan something particularly memorable for the extended holiday.

An observation worth making is that as time passes, little attention is paid to the actual purpose of this holiday—commemorating the birthdays of two exceptional Presidents: Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (February 22).

However we decide to spend this long weekend, let us embrace the opportunity to enjoy time with family and create lasting memories.

We should also acknowledge George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Without their extraordinary achievements—Washington establishing the United States and Lincoln preserving it—most of us would not exist today. So pause for a moment and offer a quiet “Thank you” to George and Abe.
