Chelsea Fire Department officials announced Saturday evening that Firefighter Peter Kannler, 37, had succumbed to an occupational cancer after battling the disease for one year. The death was classified as an active duty loss.

Chelsea Fire Chief Leonard Albanese released a statement noting: “It is with deep regret that the department announces the Active Duty death of Firefighter Peter Kannler of Engine 2, after a courageous battle with occupational cancer, at age 37.”
Kannler joined the Chelsea Fire Department on October 7, 2007, following his service with the Westwood Fire Department, which began in December of 2005. He leaves behind his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, Kiley, 6, and Hannah, 5.
Calling hours will be held today, Thursday, Sept. 8, from 4-8 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home on Washington Avenue. The funeral service, which will include Fire Department Honors, is scheduled for Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel.
