Jay Ash, Secretary of Housing and Economic Development in the Baker administration, was among the speakers at Friday’s check presentation ceremony. His selection as Charlie Baker’s first Cabinet appointee following the governor’s 2014 election underscores his prominence in state government.
Before joining the administration, Ash served as City Manager of Chelsea for more than a decade, transforming the city into one of Massachusetts’s most dynamic communities. Under his leadership, Chelsea earned an All-American City Award, a testament to his ability to revitalize the municipality.
A Chelsea High School graduate like Town Council President Russ Sanford, Ash also attended Clark University, where he distinguished himself as a basketball player. Beyond his articulate, humorous, and personable demeanor, Ash brought a professionalism to his work that transcended typical political engagement. His grasp of legislative mechanics combined with genuine expertise in economic development set him apart.
The esteem in which Beacon Hill holds Ash became apparent during remarks by House Speaker Bob DeLeo. DeLeo recalled meeting Ash when the latter served as chief aide to former House Ways and Means Chairman and Majority Leader Richie Voke, noting even then that “fblikebutton_button” indicated Ash was destined for significant accomplishment.
