Antonio Carvalho Brito, who fished the waters off Cabo Verde and Angola before spending the last twenty-nine years of his life in Chelsea, died on Saturday, August 8, 2026. He was 91.
He was born on March 20, 1935 in Brava, Cabo Verde, the son of the late Ananias Carvalho de Brito and Tareza Delgado de Brito.
He married Idalina Fortes de Brito in 1960. They were together sixty years and raised twelve children. She died in 2020.
He was a self-employed commercial fisherman, and he also worked as a farmhand and ran a bodega. During the political unrest in Angola in the 1980s he sent his family back to Cabo Verde for safety and stayed behind to keep providing for them.
In later years he played cards with his family and told stories. He is survived by children in Chelsea, Boston, Everett and Benguela, Angola, by 40 grandchildren in the United States and 31 in Angola, by five great-grandchildren here and 23 in Angola, and by his brothers Juvencio and Daniel Brito. He was predeceased by his son Isidro M. Fortes de Brito and by four siblings.
Visiting hours were held at the Welsh Funeral Home in Chelsea on August 14, followed by a funeral on August 15 and a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Grace Church on Nichols Street. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
