Maximo Francisco Paiva Purisaca of Chelsea, a ship’s electrician from Lima, Peru, whose work at sea brought him to the United States in 1982, died at home with his family on Saturday, September 26. He was 81. Calling hours are tonight, Monday, October 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Welsh Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea, and his funeral service is there Tuesday, October 6, at 10 a.m.

He was born in Lima on October 4, 1944, to the late Maximo Paiva Rumiche and Josefa Purisaca Alvarez. He worked as an electrician on ships and ocean liners before settling here, where he supported his family as a laborer and building maintenance worker. At home he was the one who painted, fixed and decorated. He followed European soccer, Real Madrid above all, and loved salsa.

He and Consuelo Castillo Paiva married on June 29, 1966, and were together 60 years. They had five sons, Jose, Juan, Luis, Ricardo and Rafael, and a daughter, Catherine. His grandchildren are Joseph, Michael, Susan, Anthony, Alison, Yerel, Aiden and Chanel, and he had a great-granddaughter, Aurora. He also leaves his siblings Julia, Hermelinda, Vilma, Maria, Jaime and Olga Paiva, and Fermin, Luis and Maria Guevara.

Burial will be at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake St., Peabody. The family published his obituary in both Spanish and English at the funeral home’s site.
