As the Jewish community in Chelsea prepares to welcome the Year 5775, we extend warm wishes for a happy and healthy Rosh Hashanah. The celebration begins at sundown next Wednesday and continues through the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), which starts at sundown on October 3.
Chelsea’s Jewish heritage runs deep. The city once housed thousands of Jewish residents, with numerous synagogues and temples serving the community. Young students attended the Chelsea Hebrew School, which operated near Chelsea City Hall.
Temple Emmanuel has experienced a renaissance under the leadership of president Sara Lee Callahan, whose dedication and enthusiasm have transformed it into a welcoming environment for families new to Chelsea. The temple continues to draw former residents back for services and community gatherings.
The Walnut Street Synagogue has benefited greatly from the commitment of former Chelsea resident Herbie Kupersmith, who has invested considerable time and effort into fundraising initiatives to sustain the synagogue’s future. His devotion to the shul deserves recognition and appreciation.

Temple Emmanuel Chelsea, led by Rabbi and Cantor Oksana Chapman, extends a warm invitation to all, particularly those recently arrived in Chelsea, to celebrate the High Holidays season. Located in Cary Square, this fully active and majestic synagogue has served the community since 1929, blending Jewish tradition with modern practices and encouraging active participation from congregants.
A Selichot Service called “Cosmos and Knishes Open House” will take place this Saturday, September 20th at 7:00 PM, featuring homemade knishes and refreshments prepared by Temple women. The High Holiday season also includes Tashlich on the Waterfront at Admiral Hill following Rosh Hashanah Services on Thursday, September 24th, “Kol Nidre in Voice and Cello” on Friday October 3rd, and “Sukkot Under the Stars” on Wednesday, October 8th.
