Edward C. Landers, a longtime resident of Haverhill who previously lived in West Peabody, passed away on June 22 at the Wingate at Haverhill Nursing Home following an extended illness. He had reached the age of 81.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on October 24, 1928, Mr. Landers was the son of the late Benjamin and Frances (Swiston) Lewandowski. He spent his childhood in New Jersey before enlisting in the US Navy in 1943, where he served overseas in Italy during World War 11. After leaving the military, he settled in Massachusetts and worked as a storekeeper at his wife’s family business, Santagate Supermarket in Chelsea, for 15 years. His subsequent career included 18 years as a truck driver at the Chelsea Fruit and Vegetable exchange before retiring.
For 60 years, Mr. Landers maintained his membership in the Knights of Columbus, Council 83 of Chelsea. He held a position on the board of directors and was deeply involved with the Bingo Committee, the Couples Club, and the K of C bowling league. In his leisure time, he enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with his wife, gardening, coin collecting, and baseball card collecting. He was a devoted Red Sox enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Concetta Rose “Connie” (Santagate) Landers, who died nine years ago. He is survived by his daughter Lissa Jensen and her husband, Rob of Haverhill, his son Edward C. Landers II of Texas, his grandchildren Guy Richard and Edward C. Landers and Renee De Simone, his great-granddaughter Raya De Simone, his daughter-in-law Constance Landers of Haverhill, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Richard C. and Guy Steven Landers.
The Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home in Peabody handled the arrangements. Interment took place at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
