Chelsea’s cross country program enjoyed a successful finish to the regular season last Thursday, with both squads defeating Greater Lawrence in decisive fashion. The boys claimed victory 24-33, while the girls won 19-40. Posting a 7-1 record, the boys secured the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Lower Division championship. The girls finished at 8-1 but fell just short in the conference standings, losing a tiebreaker to Shawsheen in head-to-head competition for the top seed. Siblings Ugo Cvjetan and Duska Cvjetan crossed the finish line first in their respective races overall. Joseph Arroyo took second place in the boys competition, trailed by Francisco Colindres in fourth and Hector Mendoza in eighth. Rounding out the scoring for the boys were Eddie Rosales in ninth overall, Chester Rath, and Jamie Aguillar. On the girls side, Arandeni Ramos placed third overall, narrowly edged out by a Greater Lawrence competitor. Patricia Guardado, Tatyana Almedia, and Jesenia Contreras finished as the third, fourth, and fifth scorers respectively for the Lady Red Devils. “This past week we have rested and tried to get everyone ready for the league meet as much as possible,” said CHS head coach Don Fay, with his remarks directed toward the upcoming CAC league meet scheduled for Wednesday at Essex Aggie. “The girls have never won a league championship and have a very good shot at beating PMA and Shawsheen Tech,” Fay added. “The boys are looking to win the lower division league meet title and give Shawsheen Tech a run for their money for bragging rights as the best overall team in the league.”
