The MetLife Foundation has bestowed its top national honor upon a collaborative effort involving Chelsea Neighborhood Developers, the municipality of Chelsea, and its Police Department. The $25,000 first prize recognizes their joint initiative to revitalize Chelsea’s Box District while simultaneously stabilizing and organizing the neighboring North Bellingham Hill area. According to Dennis White, president and CEO of MetLife Foundation, “The partnership between Chelsea Neighborhood Developers and the Chelsea Police Department is an exemplary model for groups nationwide facing similar challenges and opportunities. We are pleased to join LISC in recognizing and sharing their impressive work.” “Collaboration between community-based groups and police departments can reduce crime, stimulate housing and other development, and improve quality of life in low-income neighborhoods.” The celebration of this Award for Community Police Partnerships will take place on Friday, November 12, drawing together the dedicated resident volunteers whose grassroots commitment to public safety has been instrumental in the partnership’s success. City Manager Jay Ash, Chief of Police Brian Kyes, members of the city council, and CND personnel will join these community members in marking the achievement.
