The Chelsea High volleyball team’s season ended prematurely on Saturday when they fell to Newton South in the opening round of the MIAA Division 1 Central/East Sectional Tournament. Newton South, seeded fourth in the bracket, handed CHS a defeat despite the Lady Red Devils’ strong 14-5 record. Yet according to head coach Lisa Ceccherini, this first-round exit hardly tarnished what had been an excellent campaign. “The girls had a great year,” Ceccherini remarked. “They gave it their all, even in the tourney game. They never gave up and it was a great experience for them from which we learned a lot.” In fact, the Lady Red Devils captured a share of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Small School Division title alongside Fellowship of Christian Academy—an achievement that will be commemorated with a championship banner soon to be displayed in the CHS gym. For the volleyball program, this banner represents a historic milestone, marking the first such honor in more than 20 years. “I’m very proud of what this team accomplished,” Ceccherini noted. “We’re certainly going to miss our captain, Erin Kelley, who was the league MVP. But we have a strong nucleus of players coming back and we’ll be looking forward to next season.”
