The closing of Val’s Flowers marks the end of an era in Chelsea’s downtown business district. For more than 60 years, this establishment has served the community since its founding by the late Val Kowalski, who built the business into a thriving enterprise alongside his late wife Leona. A respected figure in Chelsea and a prominent voice within the city’s Polish community, Val was known for his business acumen and his friendships throughout the city. His shop welcomed customers from all backgrounds—Jewish, Italian, Polish, Irish, and Hispanic residents all came to purchase flowers from him. Val’s children, Frank and Barbara, eventually took over the operation and have decided to close at the end of February. Despite the business remaining successful, they have chosen to step away after devoting their lives to it. Like other Chelsea business legends before them, they will close their doors for the final time and begin the next chapter of their lives. Frank and Barbara are remembered as honest, fine people who showed kindness and sensitivity to everyone they served. The community wishes them well.
