Congratulations Senator Ed Markey: District Voters Supported Our Long-time Congressman

Chelsea, Massachusetts

Across the district, voters joined their counterparts statewide in demonstrating strong backing for longtime Congressman Ed Markey’s U.S. Senate bid against Republican Gabriel Gomez.

The electorate in Massachusetts made clear their understanding of the stakes involved and the distinctions between the two candidates. Voters recognized how consequential it would be to send a Republican to Washington on matters ranging across the political spectrum. Despite efforts by the GOP and Mr. Gomez to characterize Ed Markey as “too far left,” Massachusetts voters found the current Republican party’s positions on numerous issues to be out of step with their own values.

Beyond partisan considerations, what resonated with voters here and throughout the state was Ed Markey’s reputation as an approachable, principled and truthful public servant. Over his 37 years in public life—beginning as a State Representative from Malden—his dedication to his constituents and his personal integrity have remained unquestioned. These fundamental qualities appear to have been decisive factors in distinguishing Ed Markey during the campaign.

We extend our congratulations to the newly-elected U.S. Senator. Ed Markey is well-positioned to serve both Massachusetts and the nation with distinction in the U.S. Senate.
