Peter D. Bernard, who was born in Chelsea, taught mathematics at Revere High School, and then spent 27 years as a police officer, retiring as a lieutenant in Revere, died on September 10, 2026 in Bonita Springs, Florida after a brief illness. He was 76.
He was born on September 13, 1949, a son of Joseph L. Bernard and Maria Lucia (Hacker Rocha) Bernard. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he went to Boston State College and took a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and education, and he taught math at Revere High School for several years before changing course.
His police career began with the Boston Special Police Unit and continued with the City of Revere. Between the two departments he served 27 years and retired in 2002 with the rank of lieutenant. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Revere.
He retired to Naples, Florida, in 2002 and settled permanently in Bonita Springs two years later. He played a great deal of golf and listened to a great deal of oldies.
He leaves his son, Timothy D. Bernard, and Timothy’s wife Olena, of Naples; his children Lisa R. Bernard and Christopher J. Bernard, both of Revere; four grandchildren, Taylor, Julianna, Natalie and Elizabeth; his sister, Christine Bernard of Naples; and his companion of ten years, Deborah Huston of Bonita Springs.
A memorial service is Saturday, September 19, at 5 p.m. at Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home in Bonita Springs. Burial at Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield, Massachusetts, will be held later.
