Chelsea High’s boys basketball team moved to 2-0 in the Large Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference after defeating Shawsheen Tech 53-42 on Tuesday night at the CHS gym.
The Red Devils trailed 12-9 after the opening period but dominated the middle of the game. By halftime, Chelsea had built a 25-17 advantage, which ballooned to 48-26 following three quarters. The team’s strong performance in the second and third quarters resulted in a commanding 39-14 scoring edge during those two periods.
Although Shawsheen mounted a late rally in the fourth quarter, Chelsea maintained a lead that never fell below nine points.
Oscar Sabillon paced the Red Devils with 19 points. Eric Flores contributed 12 points to the effort, including crucial three-pointers late in the game that helped prevent a Shawsheen comeback.
Kevin Almeida added seven points, with Jorge Ramos scoring five, Eric Fernandez four, and Guillermo Zelata, Albert Alicea, and Victor Corrales each contributing two.
CHS head coach Jay Seigal’s noted that “Shawsheen had a couple of players who were much taller than any of our guys, but we utilized our speed and quickness to beat them downcourt,”, “We played with a lot of energy and hustle after a slow start and that proved to be the difference.” while also acknowledging Alicea’s strong defensive performance.
A scheduled matchup against Lynn Tech last Friday was cancelled due to snow.
At 2-3 for the season, the Red Devils will face arch-rival Revere this evening (Thursday) in a game with special significance: Revere’s Jason Seigal, son of Jay Seigal’s, plays for the Patriot team. Jason Seigal recently scored 30 points in a Revere victory over Winchester. The game tips off at 7:00.
Chelsea’s schedule continues with a road trip to Whittier tomorrow and a home contest against Northeast Vocational School on Tuesday.
